The concept of a phone that features no bezels at all is something we’ve been looking forward to for years. The quest to make it happen has included the removal of Home buttons entirely, with some putting fingerprint scanners under the display.
Now, it looks like we’re going to get our first phone with an under-display camera, too. But it isn’t coming from Apple. Or Samsung. Or even LG. No, it’s coming from ZTE.
The Chinese brand has announced that it intends to sell “the world’s first under-display camera smartphone” following a launch event on September 1, 2020. It isn’t saying much more about the device in question, although it’s going to be called the Axon 20 5G and will, obviously, feature 5G connectivity.
The folks at XDA-Developers also spotted a listing by Chinese regulator TENAA that shows the device coming with a 6.92-inch HD OLED display and a 64-megapixel camera around the back. The camera living under that screen will apparently be a 32-megapixel shooter, too.
We’ve seen concepts that have cameras under displays before, but they’ve either been non-functional or had problems that impacted image quality. It remains to be seen whether ZTE has fixed the problems the likes of Oppo have had before.
ZTE isn’t yet saying how much the Axon 20 5G will cost or when it will go on sale, let alone whether it will be available worldwide or just in China. We’ll have to wait until September 1 to get the asnwer to those questions.
