YouTube has announced that it is bringing YouTube Shorts to the big screen, with the TV versions of its app adding a new interface designed specifically for the larger screen while still displaying short portrait videos.
YouTube Shorts are videos that run for 60 seconds or less and is a feature that goes toe-to-toe with the likes of Instagram and TikTok.
Where YouTube can differentiate itself is the TV experience, and it’s announced that it has come up with a way to make videos designed to be watched on a phone look good on huge screens as well.
Our research told us that there would be unique perks of watching Shorts on the big screen. They’re easier to watch with others, and the larger screen makes it a more comfortable viewing experience. But the design challenge remained: how could we preserve the essence of Shorts with vertical videos on wide screen TVs?
The result is an interface that does away with the traditional YouTube look and feel, including the progress bar.
Instead, the title of the video and controls like thumbs up and down will appear beside it, making better use of widescreen televisions in the process. It looks pretty good, too.
YouTube says that the new experience will be rolling out on modern televisions and new gamer consoles over the coming weeks.
