The world of generative AI is one that’s increasingly difficult to ignore and Google is the latest to jump in with a pair of new YouTube features.
The features will use generative AI to give users more information about the videos they’re watching, although they’re only available to a limited number of premium members right now.
The first new feature will see comment topics summarized by AI, with the system reading the comments and then building out a collection of topics based on what it sees. Those topics can then be used by creators when coming up with new videos, for example.
To help you easily understand and participate in comment conversations, we’re experimenting with AI that organizes large comment sections of long-form videos into easily digestible themes. If you’re part of this experiment, when you open the comment section on mobile, you’ll see a new option to sort by ✨Topics on some videos.
The second feature is arguably more useful because it will allow people to ask a chatbot questions about the video that they’re currently watching. The conversational AI will be able to summarize the video if requested, although it’s quick to point out that it might not always get things right.
To help you dive deeper into the content you’re watching, we’re experimenting with a conversational AI tool. This tool lets you get answers to questions about the video you’re watching, recommendations for related content, and more, all without interrupting playback.
If you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber you can head to youtube.com/new and see if you’re presented with the option to enable these new AI-based features. If not, hang fire — if things go well they’ll eventually be rolled out to everyone.
