Apple’s latest iPhones all support the new Qi2 wireless charging standard, but the iPhone 12 also just gained support for it after Apple added it with the iOS 17.4 update.
The stealth feature drop was spotted by Macworld after testing showed that an iPhone 12 was able to charge using a Qi2 charger just as quickly as it could using an Apple MagSafe charger, suggesting that it was using the full 15W when using the non-Apple accessory.
In our tests, we first used an Apple MagSafe Charger, which was able to power up an empty iPhone 12 Pro Max to 30 percent in 38 minutes and to 50 percent in 70 minutes. Using the Anker Qi2 MagGo Wireless Charger, we powered up an iPhone 12 Pro Max to 30 percent in 33 minutes and to 50 percent in 64 minutes.
The Qi2 standard is essentially MagSafe in all but name, but while the MagSafe chargers top out at 15W of wireless charging the Qi2 standard does have provisions for that speed to be increased in the future.
The Qi2 standard includes all the same features as MagSafe including a magnetic connection for using chargers that are also stands, or car mounts that attach to the back of an iPhone without the need for clips.
More and more Qi2 wireless chargers seem to be announced every other week and because companies no longer have to license the technology from Apple, these chargers tend to be cheaper than the Apple MagSafe alternatives, something that is always a good thing for customers.
