We have had more than enough reasons to believe that the new iPhone 6 will come next month; specifically, on September 9th in a media event. All the evidence right now points in that direction, and if we were to take any hint from what Walmart has done today, it’s all but confirmed. The retail giant has announced temporary price cuts to both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, offering the former at $79 and the iPhone 5c for an astounding, not to mention highly lucrative, $0.97.
The prices mentioned above are for the 16GB variants of both the devices, and come with a 2-year contract on a carrier of your choice from amongst AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular and Verizon. The sale appears to be an attempt for clearing out the current stock ahead of the new flagship launch, and will go on for the next 90 days, indicating that the window is wider that you’d have expected, and aims to ensure that none of the older models are left on the racks when Apple unveils the new device.
It’s expected that the Cupertino company’s new iPhone 6 will follow the same pricing model as its predecessors, i.e., $199 for the 16GB model, and a good $100 more for increased memory variants. The carrier unlocked versions will definitely sell at a premium, ranging in the neighborhood of $650 or more depending on what option you’re going for. This is, of course, based on the assumption that Apple will not deviate from its earlier pricing schemes.
It’s also noteworthy in the same context that the larger, 5.5 inch iPhone model, is expected to be much pricier, whenever it gets launched. Reports have indicated lately that due to some production line issues, Apple might not be bringing both the variants of the new iPhone to the market at the same time, with some analysts pitting the launch of the larger sibling somewhere in spring next year.
The offer from Walmart, although very lucrative, might not sway every buyer who’s out in the market for a new iPhone from waiting for a few more days and look towards getting their hands on the latest and the greatest. However, as with previous iPhone launches, availability becomes a challenge in the initial weeks right after launch, and if you’re not keen on dishing out more money than what Walmart is offering, this sale can be the one for you.
