October figures from the NPD group states that the Xbox 360 has been the best selling console in the U.S. for the fifth month straight, with an impressive 325,000 units sold, compared to the PlayStation 3’s 250,000 and the Nintendo Wii’s 232,000. Microsoft boasts total sales of 3.5 million units to date having been the only console to sell more units each successive year.
Strong sales may be due to Microsoft having 6 of the top 10 selling console games for the month, with exclusive titles such as Fable III, and the epic Halo: Reach which sold 580,000 and 315,000 respectively in October alone.
An important thing to realize is that these figures are from before the launch of the Xbox 360 Kinect which sold over 1 million units in 10 days. The popularity of the Xbox 360 Kinect v.s. the Sony PlayStation Move will have more significance in the approach to Christmas, the titles released will most likely be the deciding factor in sales.
Overall sales of video-game hardware across the industry dropped 26% to $280 million for October, but video game software sales rose 6% to $605 million whilst accessory sales went up 18%, to reach $142 million.
Despite the success of the Xbox 360 Kinect and the Sony PlayStation Move, industry sales of hardware, software and accessories were down 4%, to $1.07 billion. [TechFlash]
