Here’s why you may want to install iOS 10.2 update on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch as soon as possible after Apple released the said firmware to the public earlier today, just as we had been expecting, following a slew of beta releases over the last couple of weeks.
With the introduction of iOS 10.2 to the mainstream, and iPhone and iPads the world over, Apple has not only given its new TV app a platform from which to kick off, but also been able to get bugs and security fixes out into the wild en-masse. That, arguably, is more important than any new feature.
Take the serious bug and security issue that allowed users to access an iOS device, bypassing its passcode-protected Lock screen on iOS 10.1.1 and below firmwares. It was always unlikely anyone would stumble upon the issue, but once it was out of the box, it was always going to have to be something Apple needed to address. With iOS 10.2, that particular flaw is no more, which is great news for those who keep lives inside these smartphones.
That’s not all, either. Apple has fixed a number of other security vulnerabilities as well as part of today’s iOS 10.2 release. Apple has published a list of just what was fixed, so if you have a specific security flaw in mind and you want to make sure it’s been attended to, then you can head on over to Apple’s support website to find out.
As with most of Apple’s new iOS updates however, it’s not all good news. If you’re a fan of jailbreaking for example, then you’re going to be out of luck with iOS 10.2, at least initially. With no jailbreak currently available for the new software, and hackers suggesting iOS 10.2 more difficult to jailbreak than iOS 10.1.1, we can only recommend you avoid updating just yet if jailbreaking is more important to you than security.
If it isn’t though, we suggest getting iOS 10.2 downloaded and installed forthwith. Security holes need plugging and bugs need squashing. With iOS 10.2, Apple takes care of both.
