Apple’s App Store finally has a new WhatsApp app to call its own, with the instant messaging platform finally bringing its app to those who don’t want to download it from the WhatsApp website.
The updated and dedicated WhatsApp Mac app was released back in August but it was limited in availability — it could only be downloaded manually via the WhatsApp App Store.
Considering people often want to get their apps via the App Store, that wasn’t ideal. That’s now been changed as the WhatsApp team confirmed via a post to X, the social network formally known as Twitter.
In terms of downloading, the Mac app has now been merged with the iPhone app that people might already have, meaning it’s now a unified and universal app as opposed to two different builds.
The new app is also built on Catalyst rather than Electron as was the case with previous versions of the app. That should make it perform better while also reducing the amount of battery it uses when running on portable Macs.
Those who want to download the new WhatsApp can of course do so for free so long as they’re running macOS 11 Big Sur or later, which you really should be considering macOS 14 Sonoma was released in September 2023.
