No matter how advanced technology becomes in the future, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to change the weather, but with the right application on tow, one might be able to prepare themselves adequately for what might be ahead.
If you’re an iOS user, you’ll know the stock Weather app is pretty shoddy. The most basic of all basic apps, it will give you a five-day forecast based on your location, and is essentially a bare-bones skin for Yahoo’s weather coverage.
It’s lack of accuracy is really by the by, because even if it did manage to show rain when I can see it pouring down outside, it’s still not that pretty to look at.
I know, I know; I should be grateful, right? Well, perhaps back in 2009, when the App Store was comparatively small, I was more than happy to have some form of auto-updating weather app on my device. But with, as Phil Schiller pointed out at the iPhone 5 keynote, some 700,000+ apps now gracing Apple’s online store, I reserve the right to be fussy, and Weather Live for iOS certainly shows the Cupertino company how things should be done.
Costing just $1.99, it’s clear the developers have gone the extra mile to deliver a decent weather app. As well as being able to check up on several cities (as you can do with the native Weather app), you can check cloud, satellite and radar maps offering a well-rounded approach to weather checking.
As well as seven-day forecasts, high and low temperatures, winds, humidity, barometer and such, the app can utilize the icon badge to show the current temperature. There has been a jailbreak tweak offering something similar in the past (and also a working clock for the Clock app, but this is the first time we’ve seen it done via the app store.
For me, the clinching feature arrives in the form of alerts. The app can notify you if bad weather is on the horizon, and you can also set it to give you the heads-up if the temperature is about to drop below freezing.
