Volkswagen has just announced an Apple Watch compatible Car-Net app, which has been around for the iPhone for quite some time now. According to Volkswagen, the Apple Watch app will be pretty similar to the iPhone version of Car-Net, bringing most of the features already available on the iPhone, right on your wrist.
It was suggested by Apple that its smartwatch will be able to act as a remote for controlling various aspects of our automobiles, and after Porsche released its Porsche Car Connect app for the Apple Watch, Volkswagen has also jumped on board, bringing a host of controls readily available on your wrist.
The app will let users lock and unlock their car’s doors, though this feature is supported for 2016 models and over. Given the incredible heat that can accumulate in the cabin in the summers when left parked under the sun, users will be able to open the windows or sunroof a good few minutes before walking up to the car and getting in. Of course, if you forgot to close up the windows or the sunroof, you can do so remotely as well.
If you have trouble finding your car in a large parking area, you can view a map of the vehicle’s current location right on your watch, and when nearby you can choose to set off a minor alarm to quickly locate your ride.
The iPhone version of the app also sports speed tracking and boundary notifications, and excitingly, these brilliant features have made it to the Apple Watch as well. Parents can now monitor their child’s driving speed and even get notified if the vehicle drives out of a set boundary area. “These high-tech features, available through the Car-Net app for Apple Watch, are paving the way to Volkswagen’s future of connected vehicles,” said Abdallah Shanti, Executive Vice President and Group Chief Information Officer for Region Americas.
Additionally, the app will display the current fuel level for petrol or diesel based TDI Clean Diesel engines, and to make it even better, the charge on the electric e-Golf model can also be checked right from your wrist. A list of all supported VW models can be checked out at Volkswagen’s very own website.
