Thankfully, the folks of VideoLAN seem to have the right idea, and while VLC has always been minimalistic and easy on the eye, the new screenshots suggest that the ubiquitous media player was always meant to form a loving union with Windows 8 / RT.

If you're a regular watcher of videos on your computer or mobile device, there's a strong chance that you'll be familiar with VLC. A go-to app for many, it is renowned for slick playback, smooth functionality, and, perhaps most notably, its ability to handle almost any video file you could care to throw at it.

Very recently, VLC has re-emerged on iOS after a long period in the wilderness, and with the wheels now clearly in motion for a Metro-ified version, the Windows 8 edition would all-but complete the set as far as the major platforms are concerned.

These screens appeared on the VLC for Windows 8 / RT Kickstarter page, and also depict some of the coding involved in getting things right up to scratch.

Having been announced quite some time ago, it looks as though the VideoLAN team is on the home straight, and has been tweaking things around not only to refine the performance, but also allow the app to pass through Microsoft's Windows Store validation process without incident.

And the finally, the best news of the night is that the VLC team plans to submit the Windows 8 / RT edition in the next few days, so eager fans won't have to wait too long before getting a hands-on with the long overdue app.

As ever, we'll let you know just as soon as it makes its grand entrance, so stay tuned!
