Google Maps and iOS devices have gone hand in hand ever since the original iPhone’s release back in 2007, and Apple recently signed a new deal extension with the search giant, giving iOS further access to Google’s Maps data.
That isn’t to say that Google’s Maps are the only ones out there, and a new set of maps for the iPad show that Google isn’t the only one capable of putting together beautiful interactive maps for both Apple’s tablets and those of the Android variety.
UpNext HD Maps is a 3D map app for the iPad which is a collaboration between the UpNext company and carrier Verizon, with 23 cities across the United States receiving the 3D mapping treatment.
Maps redefined. Fully searchable, tappable, beautiful maps for the entire United States. 50+ cities rendered in 3D, with 23 enhanced with even richer detail.
New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, and Austin are amongst the cities to feature the enhanced 3D maps, while UpNext claims that are are indeed on the way in due course, we’re wondering how long will that take.
Those with no 3G-enabled tablets can still use the UpNext HD Maps app, with recently used maps being cached for offline use when no data connection is present. This is perfect for those with WiFi-only tablets, or for when 3G connectivity is spotty when out and about.
A "deal finder" feature keeps track of local restaurant discounts and the like, while social media hooks make Foursquare check-ins a possibility as well as the tracking of friends.
Deal Finder – Discover deals from nearby restaurants and shops, hotels, and on your favorite brands. Save deals to your Deal Wallet for later retrieval and use.
The UpNext HD Maps app can be downloaded for free, and anyone who lives in one of the cities that has received the enhanced mapping treatment really should give the app a try, it really is a thing of beauty when in full swing.
