Unsupervised Full Self-Driving Teslas Will Launch In June, But Only In This One City

After all the false promises, leaks, and bluster it seems that it’s finally happening — Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the company will launch “unsupervised full self-driving in Austin as a paid service” in June of this year.

While the claim itself isn’t entirely new it’s worth noting that this latest one comes via Tesla’s Q4 2024 earnings call in which Musk added a little more color to the plans.

According to Musk, he believes that Tesla “will launch unsupervised FSD in California later this year, as well as in many other regions of the US.” That will presumably very much depend on how well the initial June rollout in Austin is received and whether any potential showstopping issues are uncovered.

Electrek notes that Musk’s suggestion that the Austin test will be part of a paid service rather than using the customer fleet is at odds with what he has been saying since the Robotaxi claims first surfaced back in 2016.

It seems that Tesla is essentially set to offer a driverless taxi firm in the area, similar to that already being run by Waymo in various cities across the United States.

Also of note is Musk’s assertion that Tesla will not offer unsupervised self-driving capabilities until it’s deemed to be “much safer than human drivers.” When that will actually happen remains to be seen.
