Uber has been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late, what with its management seemingly full of very bad people and its iOS app misbehaving on App Store, but today, there is finally some news about Uber’s service that we can discuss without our blood pressure increasing too much.
Following an update to the company’s mobile app, users will now be able to see their rider rating without having to jump through hoops while standing on one leg.
Before today’s update, anyone who wanted to know their rider score had to do some serious archeological digging within the iOS app, and before that, they had to request their data from Uber directly. Now though, a rider’s rating is clearly visible under their name within the app itself. No more hunting to find out what drivers think of you as a customer. Uber apparently hopes that by surfacing this rating more readily, it will encourage riders to be nicer to drivers and generally behave better.
Drivers do their best to make Uber enjoyable and safe for their riders, and we expect that riders do the same for drivers…
Another step the company is taking to aid drivers is to change the way ratings work when made as part of an uberPOOL ride. Drivers already dislike uberPOOL pickups because it essentially reduces the number of fares they can claim, but riders love it for the very same reason – it makes riding cheaper.
In order to try and avoid drivers also receiving poor ratings when Uber feels it is unjustified, the riders who leave poor ratings will be asked to explain themselves by choosing one of a handful of options. Two of those options are to say that their poor rating is due to another rider’s behavior or the route taken – if these are selected, the review will not impact a driver’s overall score.
Uber has come under attack from both riders and drivers over a short period of time, and it will hope that this move will appease both to some degree. Now, it just needs to find a way to stop being a creepy company in all manner of ways and we can all get on with our lives.
