Twitter has been renamed as part of owner Elon Musk’s rebrand, with the new X name rolling out on the iPhone and iPad, although not the Mac.
Twitter’s iPhone and iPad apps are now simply called X with Twitter branding in-app also changing to show the X logo in places.
However, Twitter remains in use in some places including Twitter Circles and other areas of the app. Twitter Blue, the company’s subscription offering, is still called Twitter Blue.
The familiar blue Twitter icon is now gone and has been replaced by a white X on a black background, while Twitter Blue subscribers have noted that alternative colors are available if they want to choose one of the custom icons from within the app.
In use, the Twitter app is still the same as it always was however and there is no sign of the payments feature that Musk seems determined to add. He wants Twitter to become an everything app, much like WeChat in China.
It isn’t clear when Twitter intends to change the branding of its macOS app, however. The Mac Twitter app hasn’t been touched in months and seems unlikely to get an update any time soon. In fact, it seems more likely that whoever was in charge of development of that particular app is no longer with the company. If that’s the case, who knows when it will get its own X rebrand to match the other platforms.
