Although Twitter is one of the most popular social networks out there, it, like Facebook, has struggled to make its native mobile app worth downloading. While Facebook seems to finally have sorted itself out on the mobile front, the official Twitter app is, by all accounts, pretty poor, and as such, rivaling offerings from third parties continue to thrive.
Tweetbot, created by app development outfit Tapbots, is arguably the most popular and polished Twitter alternatives one can find on a mobile device, and after a great deal of work and tweaking, Tapbots has finally delivered Tweetbot for OS X.
Twitter integration is now a feature of Apples computing OS thanks to Mountain Lion, but with Tweetbot now entering the fold, serial tweeters are really going to be getting their fill.
Available over at the Mac App Store as of now, it does exactly what its mobile counterpart does so well in looking native. If there’s one thing people love see when first opening up an app, it’s that it looks as though it was always meant to be there, and Tweetbot does exactly that once again for Mac.
Before I go any further in touching on some of Tweetbot for Mac’s key features and charms, I think it’s only right to mention its accompanying price tag. It weighs in at a rather hefty $19.99, and while I believe it’s worth it to a degree, I accept there are many folks out there who simply cannot / will not pay that kind of money for a social application.
With that detail out of the way, let’s run-down some of Tweetbot’s features. Now, it’s been in beta for a long time, so while many first releases are laden with bugs and imperfections, Tweetbot upholds its reputation as a seamless experience by keeping things in order from the get-go.
It’s responsive, smooth, and automatically feels "right." It packs in a wealthy inventory of options, including the ability to mute filters for keywords, hashtags, people, or clients, and shoot new a avatar photo in-app. It’s not the array of little quirks that make Tweetbot such a pleasure to use on a Mac, though, rather how snugly it seems to fit in with its new environment. A two-finger swipe to the left on a trackpad initiates the detail of a tweet, while a two-finger swipe west allows you to view a conversation.
Bearing in mind it costs as much as a Mountain Lion upgrade, the money situation might see off a few would-be consumers. Having said that, if you use Twitter as much as you use your Mac, you owe it to yourself to invest twenty bucks in this gem of a product. And also, keep in mind that Tweetbot for Mac in limited supplies, once the tokens run out, it won’t be available. So, get your hands on it fast if Tweetbot is your Twitter client of choice!
