Apple has just dropped new firmware update, tvOS 9.1.1, for the new Apple TV 4. It’s available to download right now both as an OTA (Over-The-Air) option and as an update from iTunes.
Since this release comes a month and a half after major update tvOS 9.1, and seems to be only a minor point update, it’s likely to mainly feature bug fixes and general performance improvements for Apple’s fourth-generation set-top box.
The only major change seems to be the inclusion of Apple’s Podcasts app.
The easiest way to update your Apple TV 4 is to get the update using OTA method. Simply head to System > MAINTENANCE > Software Updates > Update Software directly from the set-top box to grab the new update. The timing of tvOS 9.1.1 is interesting because it comes at a time when Apple is testing a major software update, tvOS 9.2, for the new Apple TV. tvOS 9.2 brings support for Bluetooth-based keyboards, redesigned multitasking switcher, folders for organizing apps, among other things. Apple is expected to release tvOS 9.2 at its rumored event in March this year where the company is also expected to announce 4-inch iPhone 5se, iPad Air 3, updated MacBooks, new bands and accessories for Apple Watch, and release iOS 9.3, watchOS 2.2 and OS X 10.11.4 to public.
