For today only, fans of Atari classics from the Atari 2600 era can get their hands on a little slice of nostalgia for the bargain price of absolutely nothing. Free. Zero. Zilch. You don’t get many better bargains than that!
The reason for the one-day only offer is that today is a very special day. A day that not many companies will ever see, especially in this day and age of companies coming and going without ever really creating their own identity. Today, ladies and gentlemen, Atari is 40 years old. Impressive.
To celebrate the milestone, Atari is making 100 classic titles available for free on the iOS platform. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners can take advantage of Atari’s generosity today only, and with the games usually retailing for around a dollar each or $10 for a set, the games include the likes of Asteroids, Missile Command and Centipede. Classics that everyone should have in their collection, and you really cannot beat having them in the palm of your hand for super easy access. Awesome sauce!
The 40th anniversary update for the Atari’s Greatest Hits app is available for download now from the App Store and we highly suggest everyone to run and download it now, before the free fun ends tomorrow. We know we will be doing just that.
As if having instant access to 100 classic games wasn’t enough, Atari has even added some new magic to the mix. Some games, Warlords and Tempest for example, now feature Bluetooth multiplayer gameplay for those that just can’t get enough head-to-head action. If only Bluetooth existed back when the Atari 2600 was in play!
Atari itself was founded back in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, and even offered employment to Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak along the way. Originally famous for the invention of Pong, Atari went on to make arcade machines, home consoles and games that are still proving popular on today’s next generation consoles. Atari may be some way away from the company that was founded 40 years ago, but it’s certainly not going away just yet.
