This Strap Accessory For Apple Watch Will Charge The Battery While You Wear It

We’ve all seen battery charging cases for smartphones, now meet Reserve Strap, the interchangeable charging strap for the Apple Watch. Head over the jump to read all about this brilliant contraption.

Where battery charging cases for smartphones give us the freedom to charge our phones while protecting them from drops, Reserve Strap in a similar manner, charges your Apple Watch and replaces the strap that comes in the box to slap around your wrist and charge the wearable on the go. This is definitely an exciting development for the wearable that may have been touted as one with over a day’s worth of battery life, but with no user-replaceable battery, a charging strap may just hold the key for making it last during those longer outdoor trips.

According to the creators of the contraption:

“The Apple Watch won’t be released until late April but that hasn’t kept us from getting started creating a solution for what we see as potentially its biggest flaw-a battery life of less than one day. The Reserve Strap is going to be our answer to that precise question.”

The Reserve Strap is still a prototype, given that the Apple Watch is to be released somewhere in April this year, and Apple itself has not announced any accessories as such for its wearable either. The only accessories being the choice of straps that users will be able to buy for carrying a different style on a different day. The Reserve Strap team says that the product is made from “a silicon band with embedded lithium polymer cells and an inductive charging cradle between your wrist and the Apple Watch.” Being the first concept as the team tells us, we’re likely to see new ways that would go into charging the watch in the near future.

With reports lurking around that Apple is likely to throw in a ‘Power Reserve’ mode for the Apple Watch, the emergence of such accessories is welcome indeed. The company is currently accepting pre-orders for the accessory which carries a rather heavy price for a charging strap at $249, which is only $100 short of the Apple Watch Sport edition. Exactly when the Reserve Strap will be released to consumers remains unclear.
