A huge, huge number of people use a case with their iPhones. The accessory market for the iPhone, and indeed any smartphone, is massive and there is plenty of money to be made if you can come up with something new and unique. That’s the outlook that gets many Kickstarter projects off the ground as well, so when you mix iPhone cases and Kickstarter together, what do you get?
Actually, there’s a secret third ingredient that I forgot to mention. A selfie stick.
STIKBOX, now running as a Kickstarter project that has a £33,000 target, is a combination that I didn’t expect to see and if I’m painfully honest, I’m not sure I need either. At its core, STIKBOX is a case for your shiny, expensive iPhone and that’s fine, but when you start folding out the case’s built-in selfie stick, things start to take a turn for the strange. While the accessory appears to be just an unusually bulky iPhone case at first glance, it is also a transformable selfie stick for those that don’t want to ever have to miss the chance to take a selfie again.
At this point, I have to admit that personally speaking, I’m not a huge fan of the selfie stick in general, but I can be partial to a smartphone case here and there. Unfortunately, I’m not sure the STIKBOX is a great iPhone case even before you start putting its selfie stick to good use. Sure, the STIKBOX is available in a range of colors and it even looks like it’ll offer some sturdy protection, but it’s not exactly small thanks to the need to house the selfie stick that folds out to reveal itself from the rear side of the case, which also doubles as a kickstand when required.
How STIKBOX works
At $29, and set to ship next year, the STIKBOX isn’t going to break the bank, and if you’re a selfie stick user who also needs an iPhone case, then this is just perfect for you. For me though? Not so much.
Nice try, though.
