It’s entirely understandable that a large percentage of consumers purchasing valuable devices will want to go to varying lengths to ensure that their investment is protected. It’s even more understandable when you consider the recent Bendgate scandal involving Apple’s jumbo-sized iPhone 6 Plus, which is alleged to be susceptible to damage if bent or stored in a certain way. Thankfully, we live in the age of innovation, and if there’s a problem, someone somewhere will try and solve it, which is exactly what a Korean company called Patchworks is trying to do with its tempered glass screen protector.
The Patchworks tempered glass solution is based on the theory of strengthening the structural integrity of the iPhone 6 by essentially adding a new layer of glass to the device. The actual product is manufactured and produced using “impossible” tempered glass that weighs in at a minuscule 11 grams. The finished product is just 0.4mm thick and comprises a finely detailed bevel derived from liquid silicon designed to match the curves of the Apple product.
According to the company behind the ITG Edge protector, the product has been shown throughout tests to improve the integrity of the device by up to 45 percent. Definitely results to be proud of, but you also get the impression that it’s intended to be an accessory for the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus rather than just another disposable screen protector.
After building a hugely successful company in Japan through the sale of more than 1.2 million previous-generation protective covers, Patchworks is now looking to penetrate the U.S. market with this latest innovation. One of the definite pros of the ITG Edge protector is that it offers a premium quality feel to it, which in no ways detracts from the experience of using such a perfectly engineered smartphone.
We’re pretty sure that the whole “Bendgate” saga was blown way out of proportion, but for a relatively low dollar outlay the latest Patchworks offering could at least provide peace of mind. The product will go on sale later this month for $39 or $45 for the larger 5.5-inch version.
If you’re a person that cares a lot about their precious belongings, and if you happen to own an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, then this protector is a must-have. And if you couple this offering with a nice looking, sturdy case, then you can give your smartphone the protection it ultimately needs.
