We’re always on the lookout for new apps, and when they include something like an Apple Watch component while filling a void left by Apple’s own apps we can’t help but take notice. One such app is the email client Spark, created by the prolific and all around excellent team at Readdle.
Shipping today after an extensive beta program, Spark is an email client for the iPhone that spills over onto the Apple Watch for those that have one. If you have been trying to make do with the stock Mail app on an Apple Watch then you will already be interested to see what Spark is capable of because Apple’s app leaves a lot to be desired. The good news? Readdle might be onto something.
Available to download now for free from the App Store, Spark features all the usual features such as a unified inbox and multiple signatures, but it also packs in less common options such as pinning of emails and a snooze feature that allows users to effectively push emails out into the future. That alone can be a big win if you know you need to deal with an email but don’t want to do it just now.
The full list of what Spark is capable of goes on and on. There’s smart searching, read receipts and the impressive smart notifications to say the least, with the latter only telling you about new incoming email when it’s deemed necessary. Again, this is a real game changer if you receive a huge number of emails every day. These days, that means most of us.
Alongside the iOS app though, Spark also has the Apple Watch app which is where things really get interesting. Bringing a quick reply feature to email is something that the stock Mail app should probably have done, but with Apple leaving that gap wide open Readdle has taken the advantage. Fans of the iMessage quick reply functionality on the Apple Watch will immediately feel at home here, and even if you weren’t a fan before you will be after using this.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Spark is its price though, or the lack of it. An email app like this, arguably the best on the platform, would be capable of demanding a reasonable fee. Instead though, Readdle charges nothing for the app which, if we’re honest, has us dumfounded. We’re not going to complain too loudly though, and if you’re even remotely a user of email on iPhones or Apple Watches then we suggest you at least give this a good college try.
We think you’re going to like it.
