Apple’s iPhone 8 could feature a screen with zero bezels and a front-facing camera hidden behind the screen according to a Medium post by Daniel Csonth.
He may be some way off as far as time scales are concerned on some of the features he mentions in a lengthy post, but even the most wild of his predictions look set to become reality at some point in the future of the device.
All eyes are on what Apple will be announcing when it comes time to take the wraps of the iPhone 8, and even though that is unlikely to happen for a good six months, that is not stopping anyone from reading the tea leaves or at least reading what the analysts have to say on the matter.
If you were to take everything that analysts and supposed people in the know have to say, then Apple’s iPhone 8 is sure to be the best, most futuristic smartphone to ever grace a store shelf. But alas, not all of the rumors can be accurate.
Reading through Csonth’s piece, there are plenty of ideas that have a basis in reality. Take, for example, the suggestion that the whole of the iPhone 8’s screen could act as a fingerprint sensor. Apple has multiple patents for technology that would make this a possibility, and while we don’t expect a fully bezel-less iPhone to arrive in 2017, that too is likely to happen sooner or later if technology continues to head in the direction we think it is.
The idea of a camera hidden behind the screen and even speakers that use the screen in order to create sound may sound fanciful, but again, the technology is at least on the way even if it is not quite ready to do what Csonth suggests just yet. We very much expect smartphones and tablets to one day effectively be a screen and nothing else, and for that to happen, buttons, speakers and cameras all need to go away or at least be hidden. Apple’s quest to kill the button is well under way – expect speakers and cameras to be high up on Jony Ive’s tick list of things that need to be invisible.
Read the full Medium post on the subject for more ideas of where Apple’s iPhone 8 design may go in the coming years. Just don’t expect it all in 2017.
