Whenever Apple releases new iPhones it normally includes an array of new accessories as well. In the case of the iPhone 15 though, it is now reported that there won’t be a new leather case to go with the new handsets.
That’s according to leaker DuanRui who posted on X to say that he heard that Apple won’t ship a new leather case for its updated iPhones. That sentiment was then backed up by ShrimpApplePro, another X leaker.
9to5Mac also reports that its own sources have said that there will be no leather iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro cases, despite them being some of the best cases available for previous models. They’re also a good source of margin for Apple thanks to their high asking price.
However, 9to5Mac says that there might be some method to Apple’s madness. It’s possible that Apple could have chosen the environmental route.
It may be that the decision is an environmental one, with leather having a relatively high carbon footprint. Even so, it doesn’t seem likely that Apple would simply decline to take our money for premium cases.
It also notes that some carmakers have also ditched leather, choosing to use faux leather options instead. It’s possible that Apple might go a similar route this time around, but we might have to wait until the iPhone 15 announcement next month to be sure.
