Apple has increased the number of people that are registered to be behind the wheel of its autonomous cars, potentially signally an increase in testing of the vehicles.
Apple continues to be rumored to have plans to launch some sort of electric vehicle by 2025, although quite what that project will look like isn’t clear at this time.
Companies who have autonomous cars on the streets of California have to register both the vehicles and their drivers. According to a new macReports article, Apple has added a number of drivers to its own list.
We have the latest numbers on autonomous vehicle programs from the California DMV. Apple has added 10 drivers to its team. Since our last report in late January, many of the top manufacturers have added drivers to their teams. Some have also added vehicles to their autonomous fleets. A notable exception is Waymo, which has decreased its fleet size and its number of licensed drivers.
Apple has long been said to have a team working on an Apple Car, dubbed Project Titan. The company is also said to have sounded out companies like Kia and Hyundai as potential manufacturing partners on the project, although it isn’t known whether those talks came to fruition.
What we do know is that some sort of self-driving component will be part of the launch – if and when an Apple Car ships to the public.
