After teasing it previously, Sony now says that it will release the PlayStation Portal remote player later this year and sell it for $199.99.
The new device will stream games wirelessly from a PS5 using WiFi and comes with an 8-inch display running at 1080p.
Sony says it’ll also be able to stream those games at 60fps, but it does note that the machine won’t work with Sony’s cloud streaming. It’ll only work with titles that are physically installed on a local PS5 console.
“Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible,” The Verge quotes Sony as saying. You’ll also need an internet connection of at least 5Mbps if you want to play outside the home although Sony says that 15Mbps is recommended.
The handheld was previously dubbed Project Q of course, and now that we’re starting to learn more about it it’s even more interesting. The lack of cloud streaming is an odd one, however, as is the lack of Bluetooth for connecting your own headphones. Sony’s PlayStation Link wireless technology is supported, and a new headset and a pair of earbuds with support for that are also launching.
No hard release date has been given yet, but we can bet it’ll be around before Christmas so as to allow people to buy them as gifts.
