Apple is expected to announce a few new Apple Watches this year, but it’s unconfirmed whether a new Apple Watch SE will be part of the lineup.
But when an updated model does arrive, it could well ditch the familiar aluminum in favor of a new plastic construction.
Writing in the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple may choose to go a new route with the new Apple Watch SE. Answering a question about future Apple Watch updates, Gurman said that it is “sounding increasingly likely” that the next-generation Apple Watch SE will be made of plastic.
The move away from metal to plastic would bring a number of improvements for both Apple and users. The new material would allow the Apple Watch SE to be cheaper than previous models, while it could also be lighter which would be beneficial to younger owners like kids.
Apple doesn’t normally use plastic for its products these days, but the iPhone 5c was a popular plastic model that also allowed for a cheaper iPhone option. The model also came with a number of gorgeous color finishes, something that could prove popular in the world of the Apple Watch, too.
Apple Watch SE aside, Apple is expected to launch a new lineup in September. That’s potentially going to include the arrival of the Apple Watch X as well as a newly refreshed version of the Apple Watch Ultra.
