There hasn’t been a new Apple TV for some time, but that could be about to change later this year. And according to reports, an upgraded Wi-Fi feature could be in the cards.
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup is expected to offer Wi-Fi 7 connectivity throughout, according to reports. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that new technology will also come to the Apple TV later this year. This comes after Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu both previously suggested the iPhones will go the Wi-Fi 7 route.
The current Apple TV 4K was first released in 2022 and uses Wi-Fi 6 rather than the newer Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, so it is definitely due for an upgrade. Gurman believes that we should expect at least Wi-Fi 6E to come to the Apple TV this year, but as MacRumors notes, it seems unlikely that Apple would stop there. If the iPhone 17 is getting Wi-Fi 7 we expect the Apple TV to follow suit.
The move to Wi-Fi 7 allows for faster connectivity, while it can also use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously to aid with congestion issues. However, the feature will only work if you have a Wi-Fi 7-compatible router, and not all of those support the 6GHz band, regardless.
It’s still likely to be a number of months before the new Apple TV is announced, so it’s likely we should expect more leaks ahead of that unveiling.
