The LaCie Fuel storage device, which is as compact as it is stylish, allows you to store up to 1TB of data, which can in turn be wirelessly beamed to your Apple devices such as your Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Not only can you store a whole bunch of media, but with AirPlay support, you can actually stream your favorite movies and TV shows to your Apple TV, or hook up to your AirPlay-ready speakers for a music-listening session.
The cloud has definitely become an integral component in our technological spectrum over the last couple of years, and while it’s not exactly been fraught with issues, there are still some existing caveats that mean we’re not all ready to throw our lives into the Interwebs just yet. Privacy issues and downtime, allied to the fact that despite improvements, it’s not always easy to connect to the Internet mean that physical storage is still very important, and although high-storage hard drives are relatively common and cheap to pick up, the LaCie Fuel is made with the Apple fanboy in mind.
After all, the Cupertino makes it extremely difficult to upgrade components within its devices and machines. If you have a MacBook, iPhone or iPad, then you can forget trying to bump the storage, and while you can do so with both the Mac Pro and the Mac mini, it wouldn’t be a great surprise if Apple put the brakes on any kind of post-sale modification in years to come.
If you’re a glutton for TV, movies, videos, photos or songs, and your device’s 16GB (or even less once you factor in the stock software) just won’t cut it, then the LaCie Fuel is perfect. You don’t need an Internet connection to transfer files, since the device creates its own hotspot, and with 10 hours of battery life, you can continue to browse and view your content throughout most of the day.
The LaCie Fuel can hook up to and share files with up to five devices at a time, which is pretty good going, although this will, quite naturally, have a negative effect on battery retention.
So, it looks good, syncs nicely with your Apple products, but how much does it cost? Well, you can pick up the LaCie Fuel from the company’s online store (as well as resellers) for the sum total of $199.99. Sure, it’s double, triple or even quadruple the price you might pay for a bog-standard storage droid, but with a compact design, eye-catching finish and great functionality, you get quite a bit of bang for your buck.
