The iPhone SE is currently the only iPhone to ship with a Home button, and it’s also the smallest thanks to a 4.7-inch display. But those hoping for a more modern version to arrive within the next 18 months might have to look elsewhere for their budget iPhone.
That’s because two analysts have reportedly said that they don’t expect Apple to launch an updated iPhone SE in 2024, let alone 2023.
That will of course mean that buyers of the iPhone SE will get the version that’s now on sale, all the way through to 2025.
That’s according to Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley in a research note seen by MacRumors. The note was apparently based on “multiple conversations” with people in Apple’s supply chain.
In a research note shared with MacRumors, the analysts said Apple’s decision not to launch a new iPhone SE next year could indicate that the company’s rumored in-house 5G modem will not be ready any time soon, which would benefit Apple’s existing iPhone modem supplier Qualcomm. Apple has reportedly been planning its own modem since at least 2018, and acquired the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019.
The current iPhone SE is still on sale for $429 and was released in March of 2022. The previous model was released in 2020, while the original made its debut in 2016.
