Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro isn’t expected to be announced until 2024, but a new report already points to it getting a big new display feature that the non-Pro models won’t benefit from.
According to a new report by The Elec, Apple’s 2024 Pro models will have under-display Face ID, although there will still need to be a hole for the front-facing camera. That won’t go under the display until 2026, the report says.
The report says that if Apple does add the under-display Face ID technology to the iPhone 16 Pro, we can expect the standard iPhone 17 to follow suit. Then, the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro models will be the ones that finally remove all display holes.
If Apple does indeed choose to put the Face ID technology under the display we can likely expect a rejig of the Dynamic Island. The feature is essentially only there to hide the front-facing camera and Face ID technology, although it has become more useful thanks to Live Activities. Apple also uses it for some non-intrusive notifications including battery charge state.
Apple’s decision not to put the selfie camera under the display yet suggests the company has concerns about the quality of photos taken by such a camera. Android phones that already have their cameras beneath the display can exhibit such problems, although Apple will hope to have worked around that by 2026.
