There were strong rumors that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro would have new haptic buttons that would replace the clicky ones of previous models, but that now doesn’t seem to be the case.
However, the iPhone 16 Pro could still get, apparently.
That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Writing in the Power On newsletter seen by MacRumors, Gurman reportedly said that Apple had struggled to get the buttons ready in time for the iPhone 15 launch, and that the iPhone 16 Pro launch is now likely to be the one when the buttons will debut.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman this weekend confirmed that Apple has nixed haptic buttons, and will instead introduce them next year. Gurman says Apple has been “wavering” on the feature because of the costs and the complexity. While internal test models still have the functionality at the current time, Apple is “likely” to hold solid-state technology until the launch of the iPhone 16 Pro.
We’re still expecting the iPhone 15 Pro to benefit from a new Action button, however. The button will replace the mute switch and work in much the same way as the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra according to previous reports.
That could mean that the button will be customizable and support the launching of apps, features, and even shortcuts configured via the Shortcuts app.
The iPhone 15 Pro is expected to be announced this September, with the iPhone 16 Pro likely to arrive in September 2024.
