Apple’s iPhone 15 series of devices might have only been on sale for a few weeks but Apple’s design plans are already well underway for the iPhone 16 family of devices.
Now, a new report claims that part of that could include switching to a new type of OLED display that will allow it to save power.
Citing Korean Ubi Research analyst Daejeong Yoon, The Elec says that Samsung’s OLED development roadmap includes replacing blue fluorescent materials with a blue phosphorescence which could mean reducing how much power is used by the OLED display as a whole.
There’s a suggestion that the technology is in the works for foldable phones, but it could be left as an exclusive option for Apple’s iPhones given the difficulties involved with production.
“Following the iPhone 16 next year, M14 will be applied to the iPhone 17 in 2025, and the application period for the Apple iPhone OLED material set will increase to two years,” Yoon reportedly said.
While it isn’t clear just how much battery power the switch could save, it’s important to remember that displays are among the most power-hungry aspects of any smartphone and saving power there can have a huge benefit depending on the brightness that it’s set at.
The iPhone 16 family of devices isn’t going to be announced until September 2024 if Apple’s previous release schedules are any indication, so we might have to wait a little while before we know exactly what its plans are.
