The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models will finally make the switch away from Lightning and adopt USB-C starting September 22, and charging isn’t the only thing that port can do.
As Apple confirmed in its Wonderlust event, the new iPhones can also use that USB-C port to charge other things, too.
Apple hasn’t confirmed what kind of power output we can expect, but Apple confirmed that people will be able to charge their Apple Watch or AirPods just fine.
Interestingly, Apple said that people would be able to charge the Apple Watch and new USB-C AirPods Pro 2, but we have to imagine that anything with a cable capable of plugging into a USB-C port will charge just fine — so long as it doesn’t require too much power. You won’t be able to charge a MacBook Pro, for example. But we’d expect to be able to charge any AirPods, not just those with a USB-C charging case.
This new charging feature is available on all iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, but those hoping for faster data will have to buy an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Those models, and those models alone, support USB 3 and 10Gbps transfer speeds via their USB-C ports. The other models are all still limited to the same USB 2 speeds of the previous Lightning connector.
