The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a fancy new folded camera lens that allows for an improved 5x optical zoom, but what Apple didn’t mention during its Wonderlust event is that it also allows for improved digital zoom as well.
The 5x optical zoom capabilities now mean that iPhone 15 Pro Max owners can look forward to 25x digital zoom, the most that has ever been offered on an iPhone.
However, as MacRumors is quick to note, that doesn’t mean that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is at the top of the tree — Samsung’s zoom capabilities still blow it out of the water.
Samsung’s latest Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone has 100x Space Zoom that can capture images from 330 feet away. The Pixel 7 Pro has 30x digital “Super Res Zoom” with its 5x optical zoom lens. Apple has never leaned into digital zoom because the quality is poor. Optical zoom provides a crisp, clear image using the camera hardware, but digital zoom uses software enhancement to crop in.
It’s important to remember that these new zoom capabilities are only available on the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max, too. The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro still has the same zoom that has been offered on previous models.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will join the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus when they go up for preorder on September 15. All four models will go on sale a week later on September 22.
