Apple is expected to announce its first titanium iPhone when the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are announced later this year.
Apple already uses titanium on the Apple Watch Ultra of course, and it’s possible that the new iPhones could save weight thanks to the change in material.
Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are both made from glass and stainless steel, adding weight when compares to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus’s glass and aluminum construction. Now, a 9to5Mac report looks into what a titanium iPhone could offer following reports by analyst Jeff Pu and leaker ShrimpApplePro that the high-end 2023 iPhones will feature a titanium material.
As the Apple Watch Ultra shows, making the biggest Apple Watch yet out of anything other than titanium would have been unthinkable. The watch is already the heaviest that Apple has ever shipped at 61.3g, so the use of stainless steel would have meant a very heavy wearable. Aluminum wouldn’t have been durable enough, not to mention far from premium given the price of the Apple Watch Ultra.
With this in mind we can expect the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to weigh less than this year’s models, although the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will still be lighter thanks to their use of aluminum, as noted by 9to5Mac’s report.
If the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use titanium, they won’t be lighter than the aluminum iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. They would, however, be noticeably lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which feature stainless steel bands around the side.
If that’s the case, the new iPhone 15 Pro Max could be the perfect combination of a big screen and weight reduction.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 15 lineup during an event this September.
