Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup is very much expected to be announced during an event in September and as the months tick down we continue to learn more about what’s coming. Now. we’re being told that upgraded wireless charging is in the offing.
That’s according to a new report by ChargerLab which claims that the iPhone 15 will support the Qi2 wireless charging standard.
That standard is based on Apple’s existing MagSafe which already offers wireless and magnetic charging at up to 15W. But that requires that charger makers pay Apple around $16 per unit in order to get in on the MFi program, ChargerLab reports. That will change with Qi2 support, meaning chargers could get cheaper than ever.
The report also suggests that the iPhone 15 could support faster charging than the current 15W MagSafe limit, although it isn’t clear just how fast it will go. Apple has so far lagged behind others in terms of wireless charging speeds, but if it’s part of the Qi2 standard we can likely expect Apple to follow along.
Not only that, Qi2 is compatible with all iPhones that support wireless charging, but Apple has yet to officially confirm how fast it can be. What we can confirm is that the wireless charging speed can be faster in the future. Not only Apple devices, but Android phones can also use this technology to make wireless charging more popular and universal.
This change has the potential to be a big upgrade for iPhone owners, especially those who don’t want to plug in a cable. That cable is also expected to change with this new release — the iPhone 15 is expected to switch to USB-C for the first time.
