Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 13 lineup this fall and now we have something to look forward to. That’s after Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared the news that the iPhone 13 could be the first iPhone to pack an always-on display.
So far all of Apple’s iPhones have simply turned their screens off when they are not being used, saving power in the process.
But Android phones have offered an always-on screen for years thanks to the use of power-saving OLED screens. The iPhone has used OLED for years now, but so far it hasn’t offered the same always-on feature. That might be about to change.
“Expect a faster A15 chip, smaller notch, a new display for better battery life and the potential of an Apple Watch-like always on mode and a 120Hz refresh rate and upgrades to video recording.”
Much of that matches the same changes we’ve been hearing about in recent months, but this is the first reputable report of an always-on screen that we’ve heard about. The change would be a big one, allowing users to see things like the date and time even when the device is turned off. An always-on screen could also allow Apple to display widgets and notifications all the time, too.
Apple is expected to announce the new iPhones in September, with a release coming a week or two following their unveiling.
