When Apple announced the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro in September it confirmed that the two devices would be compatible with the new Qi2 wireless charging standard.
Much like MagSafe, the new standard will attach wireless chargers and other accessories to iPhones and other Qi2-compatible devices. And now we’re hearing that the first Qi2 chargers will be around before the end of the year.
Writing in a press release today the Wireless Power Consortium says that accessories stamped with the Qi2 standard’s seal of approval will be with us soon, with more than 100 accessories in testing and certification from some of the biggest names in the game.
The first Qi v2.0 Certified products will be available in time for the holiday season starting with Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup and a host of power transmitters. Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge have all pre-announced Qi2 products. Over 100 devices are currently in testing or in the certification testing queue.
This means that we could soon see the market flooded with new wireless charging accessories that charge at a maximum 15W, like MagSafe. But unlike MagSafe accessory makers won’t have to pay Apple to license the technology which should make accessories cheaper in the future. If the WPC is to be believed, this holiday season could be the perfect time to treat yourself to a new charger.
