If you own an Apple Vision Pro you might be able to play SteamVR games in the future, but it’s going to be complicated.
That’s following the news that developers have begun to port the open-source ALVR software to Apple’s visionOS.
ALVR is software that enables the streaming of VR games to other virtual reality headsets and the belief is that the Apple Vision Pro will be added to the list of supported devices.
But there are still questions to be asked about controllers considering the fact the Apple Vision Pro uses hands to navigate its apps and interface. AppleInsider notes that the Valve Index controller is compatible with ALVR but a base station is also required to make that work.
Getting the ALVR system up and running requires a Mac and Xcode and isn’t for everyone. Gamers will also need a high-end gaming PC to run and stream the game over their home network, making the whole thing far less than ideal. It’s a matter for debate as to whether many people will bother going the ALVR route given the work required just to be able to play their VR games on the Apple Vision Pro’s impressive 4K HDR micro-OLED displays.
The Apple Vision Pro is now on sale in the United States starting from $3,499. That gets buyers the 256GB model while 512GB and 1TB storage options are also available for people who think they may need extra breathing room.
