Rumors that Apple would rename the famous Apple ID to Apple Account have been swirling for a few weeks now, and we now have confirmation that the change is happening with the release of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11.
Apple didn’t specifically mention the news as part of the WWDC 2024 opening keynote, but a press release that was later shared on the company’s website did confirm the news that Apple Accounts will be all the rage come the end of this year.
With the releases of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, Apple ID is renamed to Apple Account for a consistent sign-in experience across Apple services and devices, and relies on a user’s existing credentials.
The Apple ID has been around for decades at this point and it will be a shame to see it go. However, an Apple Account does make much more sense at this point and we can expect that the name will become more widely used over the coming months as Apple readies the release of its new software updates.
They’re all available in developer beta right now and we expect that they will be released to the public in September.
Don’t want to wait quite that long? A public beta program is set to begin next month, Apple has confirmed, allowing people to test the new software updates ahead of time with the understanding that bugs and issues are still to be expected.
