Tesla has reportedly started to offer LFP battery pack retrofits for those who own older Model 3 vehicles as stocks of the older battery packs begin to run out.
However, you’ll need to have a Model 3 that is still under warranty to be able to take advantage of this with there currently being no way to pay for an upgrade.
Model 3 vehicles are now made with a new battery pack that uses LFP battery cells which is cheaper to make but also offers less degradation in the right circumstances.
Now, several Tesla owners say that they have started to be offered the chance to receive a new LFP battery pack rather than the older one. However, Tesla will also have to upgrade the suspension due to the extra weight the new battery packs add to the vehicle.
Interestingly, Tesla is still offering people the chance to use the older battery pack if they prefer, but they’ll have to wait longer — those who choose to go the LFP route will reportedly receive their new batteries more quickly which could be a big benefit. The wait to get the older batteries can reportedly stretch as far as a month.
Another advantage of choosing the new LFP battery pack is a slight increase in range as well as the ability to charge over 80% every day without negatively affecting the longevity of the overall battery pack.
