Tesla workers reportedly shared images captured by the vehicles’ onboard cameras among themselves via chat messages, according to a new report.
Some of those videos included “scenes of intimacy” as well as car crashes involving children.
The photo-sharing happened between 2019 and at least the middle of 2022, according to a Reuters report. The images were captured by cameras that are supposed to be used for security and self-driving purposes, but it appears that Tesla employees also have access to what they capture.
“Some of the recordings caught Tesla customers in embarrassing situations,” says the report. “One ex-employee described a video of a man approaching a vehicle completely naked.”
Other scenes were even more disturbing, including a child being hit by a Tesla driving at speed.
Also shared: crashes and road-rage incidents. One crash video in 2021 showed a Tesla driving at high speed in a residential area hitting a child riding a bike, according to another ex-employee. The child flew in one direction, the bike in another. The video spread around a Tesla office in San Mateo, California, via private one-on-one chats, “like wildfire,” the ex-employee said.
Clips were reportedly shared “like wild fire” with Tesla saying that the videos collected by the cars “remain anonymous.” However, it’s thought that these situations still break the company’s rules which could see it in trouble with the Federal Trace Commission.
