Before Tesla finally brought the Cybertruck to market CEO Elon Musk was already making noises about the electric vehicle being waterproof enough “to serve briefly as a boat,” so it can cross rivers.”
Musk included lakes and “even seas that aren’t too choppy” in the list of bodies of water the Cybertruck would be able to take on. Now, we’re told that will actually be possible in the future.
Commenting on comments made by Lars Moravy, VP of engineering at Tesla, Musk now says that the company is “going to offer a mod package that enables Cybertruck to traverse at least 100m of water as a boat.” Perhaps most interesting is the news that Musk believes that all that’s really needed is for Tesla to “upgrade cabin door seals.”
We’d like to think that there will be more going into it than that, but we’ll find out soon enough.
Predictably, Musk didn’t go into details about how much this would cost or when it would go on sale, nor indeed whether boring things like warranties or insurance would be affected.
For now, we wait to see what actually happens. The Cybertruck is now on sale but isn’t available in any large quantities and won’t be until next year — the electric pickup truck was announced in 2019 and suffered multiple delays.
