Tesla has finally launched a monthly subscription package that unlocks the full self-driving capabilities of the vehicle. The Full Self-Driving package will cost $199 per month or a discounted $99.00 per month for people who have previously purchased Tesla’s now-defunct Enhanced Autopilot package.
Currently, people purchasing a compatible Tesla model are able to pay the company an extra $10,000 as a one-off payment in order to access the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package without any subscript commitments.
That purchase includes features such as auto-lane changing, a full self-driving computer system, traffic light and stop sign control, auto park, summoning the vehicle, and a few other bits.
Indications that a subscription service was coming have been in place since last year but Tesla has failed to meet multiple deadlines to release this to the public after CEO Elon Musk all-but promised that it would happen in early 2021. Now, thanks to an update to its app, Tesla has used the official release notes to confirm the existence of the $199.00 per month Full-Self Driving capability subscription.
Tesla has also sent a message to Tesla owners confirming the subscription with the title “Introducing Full Self-Driving capability Subscription:”
Full Self-Driving capability is now available as a monthly subscription.
Upgrade your Model 3, VIN ending in ******, for $199 a month (excluding taxes) to experience features like Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Auto Park, Summon and Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control.
The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.
The important part of that message is the fact this subscription does not make Tesla fully autonomous and that driver supervision is still a requirement. Tesla drivers without the FSD computer will need to stump up another $1,500 on top of the subscription in order to upgrade the internal computer to make the vehicle compatible with the new Full Self-Driving Capability subscription.
It’ll be extremely interesting to see how many Tesla owners are willing to commit to a $199.00 per month subscription to unlock these new features.
