Tesla is now the top luxury car brand in the United States, taking the spot from the usual German suspects in Mercedes-Benz and BMW as reported by Automotive News.
This is the first time that an American company has found itself at the top of the leaderboard in almost 25 years, with the aforementioned Germans normally taking the honors followed by Lexus, Audi, Volvo, and others. But now it’s Tesla’s turn, something that has been made possible by simply shipping more cars.
Tesla has long ground itself at the top of many luxury segments, but its relatively low shipping numbers and the fact it doesn’t have a spot in every segment allowed other carmakers to take the top spot thanks to increased sales. However, an increase in output by the EV maker has left Tesla sitting pretty.
The eight best-selling luxury car companies in the United States during 2022 were:
- Tesla: 491,000
- BMW: 332,388
- Mercedes-Benz: 286,764
- Lexus: 258,704
- Audi: 186,875
- Cadillac: 134,726
- Acura: 102,306
- Volvo: 102,038
BMW beat Tesla to top spot in 2021 by around 23,000 cars, further driving home the importance of actually being able to build enough cars to meet demand. That’s something Tesla has historically struggled with either due to a shortfall in manufacturing capacity or a lack of parts. In 2022, it seems things finally came together.
Tesla still has cars to begin selling and in new categories, too. The Cybertruck and Roadster are yet to begin production, opening the door to more potential sales in the future.
