Tesla owners who bought the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package can finally transfer it to a new car, but there is a catch worth noting.
There has never been a way to move the FSD to another car but Tesla says that people can do that right now so long as it’s only done within the next two months. Doing it outside of that small time window means that they could lose as much as $15,000.
Tesla owners have been asking for the ability to take their FSD from one car to another for a long time but this limitation means that people will only be able to do it if they buy a new car in this quarter, notes Electrek.
The report notes that the FSD package has increased time and again to its current $15,000 asking price. But people might already have paid once and having to pay again could cost a small fortune — something complicated by the fact that Tesla is yet to actually ship the feature some will have paid for.
Therefore, it’s a burden for current Tesla owners who paid for the package – without receiving what they were promised – to upgrade to a new Tesla vehicle and pay $15,000 to get the package on a new car – doubly so considering Tesla never delivered the promise on the previous one.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that this isn’t going to be an ongoing thing and that instead, this is an offer that equates to a one-time offer of amnesty.
