Tesla has increased the price of its Model S and Model X electric vehicles. The move comes after months of actually reducing the prices. But there’s at least some good news to go along with those price increases.
The change does see the vehicles get more expensive, but Tesla is giving three years of free Supercharging to buyers who pay the new price.
Electrek notes that the Model S and Model X were the Tesla vehicles that experienced the biggest price cuts of the entire range, but it’s those two that are now seeing the prices increase.
Tesla’s Model S now starts at $85,000 while the Model X begins at $95,000 with the latter increasing by $2,500 overnight. It’s a similar situation for the Model X as well.
Electrek suggests that the changes in price are down to slower demand and increased inventory, with the addition of three years of Supercharging thought to be more likely to drive sales than a cheaper price considering the luxury end of the market that both vehicles are in.
The fact that Model S/X are the only Tesla vehicles that don’t qualify for the new federal tax credit probably also contributed to softening in demand for Tesla’s flagship models.
Tesla regularly adjusts the price of its electric vehicles depending on the current balance of supply and demand and will likely continue to do so in the future.
