Tesla is now allowing anyone who paid for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package to install and run the beta starting right now.
The move means that the beta is no longer limited to only those who have a high safety score, potentially opening the roads to drivers who can’t be trusted to remain vigilant while in FSD mode.
The beta allows compatible Tesla vehicles to drive themselves to a destination, but the driver is supposed to stand ready to take control of the vehicle at any time.
The move to allow anyone to take the FSD beta for a spin was announced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, although it only applies to those in North America.
Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta is now available to anyone in North America who requests it from the car screen, assuming you have bought this option. Congrats to Tesla Autopilot/AI team on achieving a major milestone!
If you paid $15,000 to get the FSD feature for your Tesla and live in North America, you can now sign up and let your car drive itself. However, it still remains to be seen when Tesla will feel confident enough to remove that beta tag from a feature that it remains so vocal about.
It’s reported that there were recently more than 100,000 Teslas driving around by themselves — expect that number to increase soon.
