Tesla is no stranger to missed timelines as anyone who put their order in for a Cybertruck all those years ago will rightly attest. But things are going from bad to worse for the Tesla Roadster as well.
Speaking at a Tesla shareholder meeting CEO Elon Musk said that the design and engineering of the next-generation Roadster will happen by the end of this year. That then means that Tesla will “hopefully” be ready to begin production in 2024 according to an Electrek report.
The Roadster promises to be capable of going from 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, traveling a quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, and hitting a top speed of more than 250mph. But Tesla will have to actually build one for any of that to happen.
Potential Roadster buyers were told that the car was supposed to go on sale in 2020 but that has so far continued to be pushed back. Assuming the 2024 release window is hit, the Roadster will be four years behind schedule which suggests that Musk might have been writing checks that his engineering department couldn’t cash all those years ago.
However, even Musk doesn’t seem to be sure.
Musk emphasized multiple times that this was a “hopeful” timeline and said that “this is not a commitment” that the car would go into production next year.
That’s probably very bad news if you’re waiting for a new Tesla Roadster.
